• Most subglottic cancers are treated with combined surgery and radiotherapy .
Treatment by Stage
Stage I
Standard Treatment
• Supraglottis: External beam radiotherapy alone or supraglottic laryngectomy . There are frequent problems
with the functioning of the larynx after the latter procedure.
• Glottis: Radiotherapy, which provides both cure and good voice quality in most patients. Selected patients
with small (T1) superficial lesions can have a portion of the vocal cord removed. Partial or sometimes total
laryngectomy may be done depending on the tumor's location and size. Laser excision is under clinical
evaluation.
• Subglottis: Radiotherapy alone, with surgery used for recurrence .
Five-Year Survival 75 to 95 percent
